Product Description
This is a used OEM Haldex 5th Generation control unit with part number 31380867 (superseded by 36012520, Haldex reference 121104), designed for the Volvo Active On-Demand Coupling (AOC) AWD system. Also known as the DEM – Differential Electronic Module – this unit is the electronic brain of the Volvo Gen 5 AWD system.
What This Control Unit Does
- Continuously monitors wheel speed, throttle position, lateral acceleration and yaw rate
- Controls the hydraulic pump and solenoid valve governing rear clutch engagement pressure
- Pre-pressurises the clutch pack before slip occurs (Gen 5 pre-fill feature) for near-instantaneous torque transfer

A faulty DEM module typically fails to communicate with scan tools, making diagnosis difficult. If your scanner shows no communication with the rear differential module (U0136) or the AWD system is completely inactive, the DEM is the primary suspect. Always check fuses, CAN-bus wiring and ground points before replacing the module.

Installation Steps
- Locate the Haldex DEM module – mounted on the rear differential / Haldex coupling unit under the vehicle (rear axle area)
- Disconnect the vehicle battery before removal
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the DEM module
- Remove the mounting bolts and carefully extract the module
- Install the replacement unit and torque bolts to specification
- Reconnect the electrical connector and battery
- Clear all stored fault codes using a compatible diagnostic scanner
- Perform a road test to confirm AWD system engagement

Why Haldex Gen 5 DEM Modules Fail
1. Internal Electronic Failure
The most common failure mode is internal PCB damage – corroded solder joints, failed capacitors or damaged MOSFET drivers caused by heat cycling and moisture ingress. This causes complete loss of CAN communication (U0136).
2. Oil Temperature Sensor Failure
The oil temperature sensor inside the DEM module is a well-documented weak point in Volvo Gen 5 applications. A failed sensor triggers incorrect AWD engagement logic and may cause the system to lock out AWD as a protective measure.
3. AOC Pump Motor Failure
If the hydraulic pump motor controlled by the DEM draws excessive current or fails, the module may shut down to protect itself, resulting in complete AWD deactivation.
